Your hands are showing signs of aging

“I feel old only when I look at my hands or at myself in the mirror.” John Updike

Hands are one of the first parts of the body to show signs of aging because they receive so much exposure. Sunlight, the elements, and the natural aging process all contribute to the development of darkened spots, unsightly veins, wrinkles, fine lines, precancerous changes, and loss of fatty tissue. Nowadays, there are a variety of treatment options available to make your hands look younger. You may need one or a combination of treatments to reverse the signs of aging or sun damage. Sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles can be improved with injectable fillers or fat replacement, whereas skin texture, color, or age spots can be reduced or eliminated by peels or lasers.

Lasers can help

Lasers used for skin and hand resurfacing (ablative lasers) are devices that emit light at a uniform wavelength that is absorbed strongly by water down to the lower dermis at the depth of about 100-750 µm. Each pulse of energy ablates (vaporizes) a column of tissue measuring approximately 120 microns in diameter. As this vaporization occurs, deep healing induces collagen growth and remodeling. The laser energy is distributed in an even pattern, leaving little areas of untreated skin in–between the columns of treated tissue to stimulate skin regeneration. The UltraFine-Fractional Scanner is a unique scanning technology that makes it possible to adjust the fractional treatment to the requirements of individual patients. This feature facilitates the healing process and reduces patient downtime.

We are taking care of your comfort

To increase patient comfort during the procedure, the device has a built-in chiller. Sometimes, topical anesthetics or local nerve blocks to numb up the sensitive areas are required. Sedation is not necessary. Although healing after laser treatment may vary from patient to patient, usually the hands appear red and dry on the first day after treatment. The feeling of tightness and itching continues for about one week when the dry skin exfoliates revealing soft pink tissue. After hand resurfacing, the patient is required to avoid excessive sun for 4 weeks. Sunscreen containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide is advised when going outside.

What about downtime?

Lasers are associated with low complication rates and minimal downtime. Laser treatments give your doctor precise control to remove spots and lines in a rapid and bloodless fashion achieving notable improvement of skin condition.
