Introduction To

Microdermabrasion

They say “diamonds are a girl’s best friend”, but if you think about it, diamonds don’t DO much for you, do they? The saying honestly should be “a Diamond tip is a girl’s best friend”, because when you need your skin to shine, there’s no better way to achieve perfectly exfoliated skin. Advanced Plastic Surgery in Grand Rapids, MI offers our patients one of the best skin treatments on the market with Diamond Tip Microdermabrasion.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion gently exfoliates and polishes away the top layer of dead skin cells which tend to layer up as a result of oil production, improper product use, and weather changes. This is a great way to achieve that healthy glowing skin with little downtime. The raking motion of the diamond tip exposes the lower, healthier, and fresher layers of the epidermis being covered by layers of dead skin. Such intense exfoliation will decelerate the aging process and allow your at-home skin care products to properly absorb.

Coupled with chemical toners and a micropolish, the suction power of the Microdermabrasion treatment diminishes the appearance of hyperpigmentation, sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles, and shallow acne scars. After the treatment, it is important to hydrate the skin and use a strong sunscreen to nourish and protect the turnover process occurring within the skin layers. It is great for a big event, or seasonal skin changes, and an amazing way to prepare your skin for more invasive medical spa services such as laser or microneedling. Each Diamond Tip Microdermabrasion is followed with a calming and hydrating bio-cellulose mask, allowing our guests to leave with comfortable, healthy skin and little to no downtime. Additionally, when coupled with a chemical peel, the exfoliative effects of the Microdermabrasion become more noticeable and give a cleaner appearance to the skin surface.

What are the Benefits of Microdermabrasion?

Advanced Plastic Surgery has seen our Grand Rapids patients see so many benefits from the Microdermabrasion treatment. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Achieve glowing, dewy skin: great for big events, such as a wedding, class reunions, etc. Your skin will be prepped and ready so that your makeup lays like a dream, or for our gentlemen patients, it’s an effective way of exfoliating the little bumps from razor burn to prevent them in the future.
  • Customizable options: you can add a customized facial, which acts as a kind of pre-mask or micro-polish mask. If you follow your microdermabrasion with a mask and incorporate a steamer, it can get your skin to its optimal health.
  • Improves with every treatment: by doing it at least every 3 or 4 months, your skin will change tremendously.
  • Pairs well with other products: it improves the results of certain skin products by removing the dead skin and allowing the product to penetrate and reach what they need to get to.
  • A perfect solution to the changes in weather: due to the seasonal changes in Michigan, your skin will go through changes of its own with the frequent fluctuation of moisture in the air, dew point, and humidity.
  • Relatively quick treatment time

Who are the Best Candidates for Microdermabrasion?

The best candidates for Microdermabrasion in Grand Rapids should be overall healthy and looking to get rid of common skin conditions, including:

  • Age spots
  • Clogged pores
  • Minor acne scars
  • Shallow wrinkles and lines
  • Skin texture issues
  • Sun damage
  • Uneven discoloration

Certain skin conditions won’t respond as well as others and we, unfortunately, can not recommend this treatment for patients with light eczema, a rash, or extreme acne, as microdermabrasion can cause them to inflame, or if a pustule breaks open, the bacteria is just going to spread around. However, if you use certain products that topically dry out your skin, we may be able to help improve the results of the product.  Your treatment will just consist of a lesser amount of suction or vacuum from the machine.

“Enjoy your beautiful self!”

What to Expect on the Day of Microdermabrasion

When you come in for your Microdermabrasion, it will begin with a cleansing process. We use a toner that provides a chemical exfoliation to help get rid of the “glue” that’s hanging onto the dry, dead skin cells. Next, a micropolish is used to lightly exfoliate and warm up the skin to stimulate the lymphatic system.

Once the skin is nice and dry, we’ll use the machine with the diamond tip wand and do what is called “raking”. By using specific motions, the skin is moved around in certain ways so the dry, dead skin cells are removed. The number of passes across the face needed will depend on how much layering the patient has. Although the area is a little bit more delicate, we can even perform the treatment on your neck.

Finally, we’ll will take your procedure a couple of steps further by using our signature-line bio-cellulose mask, or a few different mask types from SkinCeuticals, which will depend on how your skin reacted and what your skin needs. This stage with the mask treatment gives you about 15 minutes of relaxation while your skin rehydrates and replenishes the ingredients that your skin needs. This time also allows any redness or irritation to settle before you leave.

This treatment will only take about 45 minutes from start to finish.

Microdermabrasion Recovery

Right after your treatment, a tinted sunscreen is typically applied. Your skin may feel a little tight and somewhat irritated for the first 12 to 24 hours, so you should wake up the next day with your skin feeling rehydrated and smoother than it ever has been. You are encouraged to drink plenty of water following your microdermabrasion because your skin will naturally detoxify itself due to the process, which involves lots of raking across your skin which moves a lot of lymph (a clear-to-white fluid that contains proteins and fats) and a deep massage from the vacuum. Having enough water within the layers of your skin allows the products and allows the Microderm to do their job.

You will be able to return to your normal routine immediately following your treatment.
