The role of hormones

They relay messages between organs, coordinate activities in the body, create our instinctive reactions, and play a main role in shaping the preadolescent and adolescent part of everyone’s lives. The physical effects hormones have on the body become increasingly apparent with age, beginning with acne during one’s teenage years. Redness, oil, pustules, and even scarring from acne can take a serious toll on one’s self esteem during a time when self-image and confidence play defining roles in shaping a person. To combat acne, it is important to discuss a comprehensive plan of action with your doctor that combines medical approaches with a solidified at-home regimen for the best results.

Eliminate the buildup of oil and bacteria

Acne pustules are caused by a combination of oil, sebum, hygiene, bacteria, and largely hormones. Hormones prompt the skin to begin producing more oil during adolescence while pores start to open. This oil stays on the skin along with bacteria that cause irritations in the form of acne. One goal of skin care is to eliminate the buildup of oil and bacteria by washing the face with various products. Some products may even worsen acne, so be sure to speak to an aesthetician or dermatologist to assess the needs of your skin. However, cystic acne can be linked to hormonal changes which can only be combatted with medical treatments, cosmeceutical products, or hormonal therapy. These factors address the superficial effects of acne, but acne can wreak havoc on more than just the face.

The importance of self esteem

Self esteem is a key factor which persuades people to seek help for acne. Skin is the first thing that people see. It can be embarrassing and even saddening for one to know that the first thing that other see on the face, the features that gives one personality, is a collection of pustules and red blotches. Though family and friends may not understand how acne personally affects your self-confidence, all the negative emotions you are experiencing are valid. You should listen to them and look for a treatment plan that brings out the real you hidden from beneath your acne.

How to find the best treatment option?

Seeking help begins with admitting and accepting that there is something you would like to change it for the better. Also, you need to believe that you can change it! Remember – do not be hard on yourself. Approach facial improvements with a sense of constructive criticism, not negative statements. The next step is trickier. You want to find a treatment option that works. There are literally thousands of products, lines, and advertisements that all claim to perform the same function and have the same results; it seems difficult to choose the right product combination without extensive trial and error which prolongs the healing process.

Find the best specialist

Another approach to constructing a treatment option is a simple phone call and consultation in a skin care specialist’s office. He/she has both the knowledge, experience, and products available to offer you a complete skin care treatment. At Advanced Plastic Surgery, this treatment plan may include medical spa procedures such as microdermabrasionchemical peels, customized masks, or even lasers and microneedling, depending on the degree of damage experienced by the skin. Our aesthetician may also recommend and advise products to achieve the best results.

Regular application of the treatment plan

Finally, the third step in skin care is persistent and regular application of the treatment plan. It may take time, but patience is key with any skin care. You will not see results the next day. The body needs to re-equilibrate its skin and hormones, depending on the therapy, to maintain the most long-term results. It is also important not to overwork the skin with too many therapies to avoid additional unforeseen damage that can undo treatment. With time and determination, your skin will adjust to the changes brought by the products and therapies. It may even stop producing acne altogether, but it is all up to you! Let people know when they look at your new, fresh, and radiant skin that you were bold enough to ownership of an insecurity and decide to make it a strength.
