Procedure: Unilateral breast reconstruction with implant and contra-lateral breast reduction for symmetry
This young lady was diagnosed with left breast cancer at the age of 50. She elected to undergo left mastectomy with immediate reconstruction and preserve her right breast. Since both of her breast were saggy, skin reduction procedure to elevate both breasts needed to be implemented. In course of her cancer treatment, our attention was focused on the left side. After mastectomy and nipple removal, skin reduction procedure was employed to rearrange the remaining breast skin and use some of her redundant breast skin to rebuild her breast and create more protection of the tissue expander. The tissue expander was placed in the breast pocket on top of the muscle replacing the breast tissue. During the second stage of her reconstruction, the left tissue expander was replaced for a permanent implant and right breast reduction was performed. At the same time, the left nipple-areola complex was created using the redundant skin from the right breast for areola reconstruction. The photographs show her 9 month result. She is pleased with her reconstruction.
