You’ve done it. The treatment plan is set in motion, the consultation is history, and the procedure date is fast approaching. You’ve talked to your doctor about the surgery and at-home care after surgery. Being at home after a potentially life-changing procedure can seem like the distant future- an “all clear” signal after the impending fear before the surgery. However, what happens at home is equally as important as what happens in the operating room. That being said, to aid your body’s recovery, you will need to depend on a family member or close friend to escort you home and make sure that you rest safely.

You need a support

To “depend” on someone can be difficult. You made the decision to get cosmetic surgery by yourself and for yourself; bringing someone else into the picture to take care of you can seem unfair. Dr Timek considers this problem to be a valid concern, but she will remind you how crucial it is that you create a support system of family and/or friends and make sure that you will not go home alone after surgery.

No matter the size of the procedure, from local skin adjustment to more serious tummy tucks, the presence of others is required. Family, friends, the physician, and operating room staff are there to assist you in times of highest vulnerability.

Before you undergo a procedure, ensure you know the answer to the following questions:

  • Who will drive me home (if the procedure is done on an outpatient basis)?
  • Will this person escort me to the surgical facility?
  • Will this person stay in the facility during the surgery?
  • What will happen when I come home?
  • How long will I need to depend on someone at home?
  • Has my caretaker taken proper time off from work to help me?
  • In the unfortunate case of a complication warranting extended hospital stay, who will help me?
  • Who can I turn to with questions?
  • Do I have all the necessary equipment (drainage containers, garments, gauze, other dressings, etc.) ready for me at home?
  • Who will provide food for me in my time of need?

At home care is as crucial as the success of the procedure itself. Provide yourself with the ample conditions to rest, recuperate, and regenerate to successfully heal your post-surgery body.
